19 Feb 2007 - What a difference a week (and a full team) makes!
After last weeks disappointing result the Lions, this time with a full team, put on a far better performance against Stanningley on Sunday . The Lions could have been one down in the first few minutes but a fine save from Kerrigan, making his debut in goal, put the ball over the bar.
Kerrigan kept the Lions in the match with some more fine saves but mid way through the half a cross from the Left from the Stanningley number 10, whose pace caused problems for the Lions, was put away at the far post. Just before half time Stanningley added a second.
The Lions came close though with a shot deflected by the keeper onto the bar and others narrowly missing.
Following half time Kerrigan continued his performance with fine saves when goals looked almost certain, but what looked like disaster struck when Kerrigan had to come off injured. Capitano who had already performed another fine role in defensive mid-field, led by example as captain and donned the goal-keeper jersey.
Kerrigan went off the field to applause not only from the Lions but also, sportingley, from Stanningley spectators and players.
Capitano continued his fine perfomance in goal with some fine saves whilst the Lions continued to press at the other end. Eventually the deserved goal came with a strike from sub Walker.
A clearance from Fisher off the line at the other end kept the Lions in the match.
Elwen had an opportunity to equalize after a sprint with the ball from just over the half way line, but at this stage with fatigue set in the final shot did not trouble the keeper.
Final result 1-2 and despite being a loss an exciting, and, importantly, a very encouraging performance.
'Man of the Match' was awarded jointly to Capitano and Kerrigan.
Team:
Kerrigan, Bilbey, Brown, Shaw, Capitano(c), Waldron, Battye, Fisher, Hullock, Elwen, Wall, Walker
