Club Values and Goals

"FUN"

"Fun is pivotal if it isn't "fun" young people ,won't play sport. Skill development is a crucial aspect of fun; it is MORE important than winning even among the best athletes."

Reproduced from: Ewing, M. E. & Seefeldt, V. (1990)

"Ask yourself this question; are you more interested in the result than the development of your players"

John Bleakely GJFL Development Officer reporting on the clear message given out by John Peacock (England U17 Coach) at a Coaching Demonstration Feb 2007

"Child First, Winning Second"

This doesn't mean we don't agree with trying to win or think that children should not take part in competitive sports. Winning is important but not "winning at all costs". If you don't agree with the statment "Child first, winning second" turn it around "Winning first, child second" and see if you agree with that, if you do, imagine your son or daughter as the child and see if you still agree with it.

The values and goals of the Cross Gates Lions Football Club are:

to provide a positive learning environment in which children can develop their football skills;

to ensure children of all abilities receive a fair chance;

to ensure the children develop a love for the game of football, have fun and enjoy themselves;

to develop the social skills of the children;

to develop the skill of our coaches on a continual basis.

We also recognise that we have an obligation to instil in our players:

the need to respect the coach, the club and each other;

the understanding that not everyone has the same level of ability;

to always try their best;

to respect the referee and the laws of the game;

to respect the opposition and be both a gracious winner and a gracious loser.

The role of our coaches is to impart the above values and goals to the children. Their success (and our own) will be defined by the number of players who turn up to play again next year and not by the number of championships won.

The role of the club officials is to support the coaches in developing and implementing the above values and goals.

Values for Parents and Guardians

To help the club achieve the above, only positive encouragement and comment is allowed from the sideline. Please do not abuse the referee, shout at your child or engage in behaviour which is counter-productive.

Code of Conduct for Players

Code of Conduct for Parents & Spectators
