'Nine Man Lions Battle Valiantly

With Brett Rose out for six weeks with a broken arm, three other players ill or injured (inlcuding keeper Dominic Maskill) and two unavailable Cross gates Lions could muster only nine players to take on Chapeltown in round two of the Supplementray Cup. Rather than forfeit the match the players voted to play. In the first half they battled valiantly against a strong Chapeltown sidse and a fierce wind. They had two chances at the Chapeltown end but the first half was tale of battling against the storm in more ways than one. The half ended 5-0 to Chapeltown but even the weather wasn't going to do the Lions any favours, in the second half the wind dropped and the hoped for advantage of having Chapeltown fighting against the wind didn't  materialise. Chapeltown scored a further three times but the half wasn't so one sided. Cross Gates had a number of chances and forced acouple of fine saves from the Chapeltown keeper. Alex Proctor, playiong in goal, came up to take a free kick and also came close. In the end determination paid off and with ten minutes to go Josh Shaw scored a well deserved goal. An 8-1 defeat but a perfomance to be proud off by nine players who gave their all.

Cross Gates Lions 5 Beeston Juniors B 1
3rd February
Garforth League Under 14 Division 4

With the weather playing havoc with fixtures throughout January Cross Gates Lions took on Beeston Juniors this Sunday in what was only their second match this year.

Both teams appeared evenly matched from the kick off with chances at either end. Brett Rose forced a fine save from the Beeston keeper and then a few minutes later broke the deadlock midway through the first half. Beeston continued to press for an equalizer and came close from a corner which sped across the face of the goal but the first half ended with Cross Gates Lions holding onto their one goal lead.

Early In the second half Michael Brown made it 2-0 instigating a spell where Cross Gates Lions dominated the game. Wingers Alfie Leeds and Josh Shaw stretched the Beeston defence but it was the strength and impressive dribbling of centre forward Michael Brown which caused them most problems and resulted in him scoring two more and having another effort disallowed for him being adjudged to be narrowly offside. Brett Rose also added a second to his tally.

Beeston managed to steady the ship and again came back at Cross gates to try and address the 5-0 score line. They pulled one back with a fine free kick from twenty-five yards out which keeper Dominic Maskill had no chance of reaching.

The game ended 5-1 but the score did not reflect the contribution Beeston had actually made to a very good and entertaining game of football.

Michael Brown (centre-forward) and Martin Brown (centre-back) were jointly awarded Man-of-the Match but mention should also be made of Joe Bilbey, also at centre-back, whose composure when under pressure or in a tight corner was very impressive. It was also an impressive performance from the whole team, one of their best so far this season.

Date: 6th Jan 2008

Cross Gates Lions started the new year with a home match against Leeds City Juniors, sitting just above them in the league. Cross Gates went one up in less than a minute with a shot from Michael Brown being deflected in off the head of a Leeds City defender but Leeds City had levelled the score within the next five minutes. Cross Gates again took the lead with a second from Michael Brown but not to be out done Leeds City levelled the score a second time. Dominic Maskill made a fine save only to see the rebound pounced upon by a Leeds City player. Before half-time though Michael Brown, in his first game playing up front, completed his hat-trick with a third goal, a fine shot from the left at a very difficult angle to make the score 3-2. In the second half Leeds City again equalised but Cross Gates replied through Joe Bilbey, moved from defence to attack, to reinstate the one goal lead. But this was not a match where any lead could be taken for granted and yet again Leeds City levelled the score with five minutes to go.  In the dying seconds though, Ashley Hullock bundled the ball into the net with his chest after the Leeds City keeper had been unable to hold onto the ball.

Final score 5-4 to Cross Gates Lions. Not a 'pretty' game of football though both sides had spells of some good quality passing and movement. This was more a game of grit and determination by both teams and Leeds City ensured that Cross Gates were not going to take the full three points without earning them.

Man of the Match - Ashley Hullock.

Cross Gates Lions 2
Chapeltown Juniors  4

Date: Sunday November 25

In their first encounter this season Cross Gates Lions came off second best against Chapeltown. Cross Gates took the lead in the seventh minute with a well taken free kick by Brett Rose from 25 yards out. Chapeltown responded quickly though, their first goal, a fine header at the far post, from a cross which Cross Gates should have prevented being floated in.This was followed rapidly by a second, Chapeltown seizing on a mistake by the Cross Gates defence, to run through on goal. By half time Chapeltown had shaken Cross Gates with two further goals.

In the second half Cross Gates had steadied slightly but were still fortunate that Chapeltown did not capitlize on some good chances. But Cross Gates too had their chances at the other end with Joe Bilbey hitting the post and seeing another effort go just wide. Chapeltown were also unfortunate to have a goal disallowed due to an offside decision. In the last minute of added time Cross Gates pulled one back through Joe Bilbey with a knock in from a corner but it was too little too late. Chapeltown had the edge over Cross Gates in teamwork and passing and deserved the three points.

Cross Gates Lions man-of-the-match: Andy Battye (midfield).

Team: Dominic Maskill (goalkeeper), Simon Smith, Michael Brown, Martin Brown, Josh Shaw, Alexander Elwen(captain), Ashley Hullock, Josh Fisher, Andrew Battye, Brett Rose(1), Joe Bilbey(1), Guy Hunter.

After last week's cup tie, Cross Gates Lions returned to the league this weekend travelling away to Beeston. The first half ended 0-0 with both sides having equal chances at either end.

Ten minutes after the break though Beeston broke the deadlock with a shot from inside the penalty area on the right. Ten minutes later they struck again, keeper Michael Brown pulled off a spectacular close range save only to see the rebound pounced on by a Beeston player. Shortly afterwards Brett Rose, for Cross Gates Lions, after beating two players, fired a shot from the edge of box and pulled one back for the Lions putting them back in the game.

In the final minutes Cross Gates piled the pressure on Beeston and with five minutes to go Alexander Elwen latched onto a cross from Trevor Waldron and volleyed the ball into the Beeston net, only to be ruled offside and the goal disallowed.
The game remained at 2-1 leaving Cross Gates to rue the chances they had missed. Man-of-the-match was Luke Watson for his tireless running on the right wing.

Garforth League U14 Challenge Cup, 2nd Round.
21st Oct 2007

Colton Juniors - 2 Cross Gates Lions - 2
(End of normal time 1-1).

Colton won 4-2 on penalties.

It was a different Cross Gates Lions Team which lined up against Colton Juniors this Sunday to the one which conceded twelve goals in the league last week. With five regular players unavailable, Michael Brown made his debut standing in as goal keeper for Dominic Maskill and Matthew Bland also made his debut.

Cross Gates started the game in defensive mode trying to smother each Colton attack and give them few opportunities. The strong defensive line up though left Brett Rose the sole striker with an almost impossible task up front. The Cross Gates defence held out under immense Colton pressure until after twenty minutes Colton's number 18, Josh Smith, broke free and was then adjudged to have been tripped in the penalty area. To Cross Gates' relief the resulting penalty went wide of the post. But Colton kept the pressure on and the goal, when it came, was a great individual effort by Josh Smith who got past at least two defenders on the left to fire into the net.

After half-time Cross Gates made some changes with Joe Bilbey joining Brett Rose up front but it wasn't until the dying minutes when this paid off. Joe Bilbey broke free on the right and shot past the keeper, ensuring the match went to extra time. Both sides now had to draw on all their reserves of energy to see themselves through extra time and Cross Gates hearts were lifted when Joe Bilbey, on the edge of the box, lobbed a high ball over the keeper. In the second period of extra time Cross Gates had to hold on to their lead for just ten minutes but Colton were by no means out of the game. A long ball into the box was latched onto by Colton's Glen Hewitt who levelled the score at 2-2 and leaving the match to be decided on penalties. With Cross Gates missing two out of four penalties and Colton missing just one it was Colton's fifth penalty which sealed the day. Colton winning 4-2 on penalties.

Cross Gates Lions Coach, Mark Elwen said,"Before the game I said I wanted each player to come off the park knowing they had given one hundred percent. They did just that and I'm extremely proud of them. They played for each other and, despite being knocked out, their spirits are high."

Mark had praise for both the Colton and Cross Gates teams, "Both teams deserve credit for a thrilling and entertaining local derby, played in a very good spirit. There had to be a winner and a loser but on the day all those taking part were winners for putting on a fantastic game. I wish Colton every success in the next round."

After a bright start with chances at either end it seemed that it may be a close match with both sides evenly matched. Rose had efforts at one end whilst Elwen cleared from the line and Maskill pulled off some fine saves at the other. However after 20 minutes Kirkthorpe took the lead from a corner, a header clipping the post and going in. In the next ten minutes they breached the Cross Gates defence twice more to make it 3-0 at half time. In the second half Cross Gates faded with Kirkthorpe rampant throughout, although Cross Gates had their chances to try and get something with Bilbey and Rose both having strikes on goal. The last ten minutes saw Cross Gates with a brief spell of pressure on Kirkthorpe. With Bilbey pulled back from centre forward to help in defence and Fisher and Elwen pushed up front Cross Gates came their closest to scoring after a nice pass from Fisher set up Elwen but the resulting overhead kick went just wide. Final score 0-10.

Cross Gates Lions 6 Oulton Juniors  0

Date: Sunday, September 16
Competition: Garforth League U14 Division 4

Cross Gates Lions welcomed Oulton Juniors to their ground for their first home match of the season.

Cross Gates began the game positively putting Oulton under pressure from the start. The first ten minutes saw Joe Bilbey put a shot just wide and hit the crossbar and Brett Rose also had a near miss from a shot. Despite the pressure, Oulton gave Cross Gates a scare on the counter attack with a fast break by their number 17. Only a break neck run back by Alfie Leeds managed to do enough to stop a shot on goal. On twelve minutes the pressure by Cross Gates broke the deadlock with Joe Bilbey running and shooting on goal to score his first. He followed this three minutes later with his second from a cross.

His hat-trick came shortly afterwards when, Ashley Hullock in mid-field, with great awareness lofted a pass which he was able to latch onto and coolly finish. Brett Rose then made it four on twenty five minutes. Oulton were slightly unfortunate to have a penalty awarded against them just towards the end of the half when Josh Fisher was adjudged to have been fouled when caught by a boot going for a low header. Brett Rose made it five from the penalty spot before coming off shortly afterwards with an injury.

In the second half Oulton defended doggedly and continued to try and hit Cross Gates on the break. Despite immense pressure Oulton held on until Josh Fisher added a sixth ten minutes from the end.

A good effort by the whole team. Ahsley Hullock, playing in midfield, was named man-of-the-match with notable performances also from Trevor Waldron in defence and Luke Watson on the right wing.

Cross Gates Lions: Dominic Maskill, Alfie Leeds, Martin Brown, Josh Shaw, Trevor Waldron, Luke Watson, Alexander Elwen(c), Ashley Hullock, Josh Fisher, Brett Rose, Joe Bilbey, Guy Hunter, Andrew Battye.

Calverley Juniors 3 Cross Gates Lions 2

Competiton: Garforth League U-14 Division 4
Date: Sunday, September 9

Cross Gates Lions opened their league campaign with an away game at Calverley.

Within two minutes Calverley had come close with a shot across the face of the goal, just inches wide. At the other end Rose came close with a strike for Cross Gates. On ten minutes a low corner from Rose was volleyed in at close range by Luke Watson, his first goal for the team on his league debut. On twenty minutes though Calverley levelled the score and just five minutes later made it 2-1. But on twenty seven minutes Cross Gates levelled. Bilbey headed the second for the Lions after Elwen had beaten the defender on the right and crossed the ball into the box which Calverley failed to clear.

In the second half Calverley made it

3-2 just five minutes into the half after a long ball from the half way line went over the defence and was latched onto by a Calverley striker.

Cross Gates then weathered a fifteen minute period of intense pressure from Calverley. Keeper Maskill kept Cross Gates in the match with some excellent close range saves and Brown and Leeds played solidly in defence.

Cross Gates managed to regroup and the last ten minutes saw Bilbey fire wide after an excellent passing move through midfield and then a free kick from Rose would have needed just a touch as it went across the face of the goal.

Final score a 3-2 win for Calverley. For Cross Gates a disappointing result but not a disappointing performance.
